8 Tips for Designing a Basement Home Gym

8 Tips for Designing a Basement Home GymEven with Colorado’s 300+ days of sunshine each year, not every day proves ideal for outdoor exercise. And, with busy schedules, going to a gym can be a hassle. If you want to make working out more convenient, the answer may be right under your feet! Consider a basement’s natural properties that make it the ideal location for a home gym:  cooler temperatures are perfect for exercising, noise from equipment is contained, travel time is not an issue, and you can squeeze in a workout whenever it fits into your schedule. The perfect, personalized gym can be incorporated into any basement remodeling project.

Are you ready to create your dream home gym? Here are some tips to get you started:

1. Assess the space needed vs. space available

When analyzing what type of equipment you want to use, consider how much floor space it will occupy (footprint) and how much open space is required to use it. For example, weights take up less space than a treadmill, but require additional space to use. Consider the location of electrical outlets in relation to the space (you may wish to install a dedicated electrical circuit for heavy equipment).

2. Consider flooring options

Many people like rubber flooring because it is forgiving and softens the impact on joints, but find its aesthetic appeal less pleasing in a home environment. Installing a green, sustainable, low VOC-emitting carpet over a rubber floor will maintain the floor’s flexibility, while reducing the odor of the rubber and adding warmth, softness, and visual appeal.

3. Determine lighting needs

Don’t underestimate the value of proper lighting, which–in a gym setting–can help energize you. Even if your basement has lots of natural light, consider adding sufficient artificial lighting for low-light days, early mornings, and evening/nighttime. Installing a dimmer on ceiling fixtures would help create the right atmosphere for lower-impact exercise, such as yoga or Pilates.

4. Don’t forget air circulation

Get those endorphins flowing by working up a sweat, but don’t allow your gym start smelling like a locker room! Ceiling fans keep air moving and help mitigate odors. Ventilation fans can also be installed in walls or on ceilings.

5. Install a mirror

Mirrored walls in gyms aren’t just for checking your hair or admiring your six-pack. Utilize them to confirm that you are practicing correct form and posture to maximize the benefit of your workout and prevent injury. Mirrors also reflect light and create a spacious feel. If your basement gym is small, this can help you feel less cramped.

6. Include proper storage

Consider how your equipment will be stored when it is not in use. Proper storage keeps weights, bands, mats and other items in good shape, and keeps them out of the way so they don’t become a tripping hazard. Corner cabinets take up less space and are perfect for storing smaller items.

7. Crank up the tunes

If, like many people, you find music to be a great motivator, consider installing a sound system. Include a TV if you prefer a distraction–perhaps for a treadmill or stationary bike–or to stream exercise videos.

8. Incorporate motivation into the decor

Motivational quotes that inspire you can be displayed as art. Hang a dry erase board to keep track of your progress. Vibrant wall colors can also have a stimulating effect.
