And the Winner is . . . Best Basements of 2022!

As we head into the new year it’s always fun to look back on the previous one and review some of our favorite projects and what made them successful. Having innumerable choices among the many basements we closed in 2022, it’s difficult to pare down the list to a highlight reel, but—for the sake of time (and since we didn’t get photos of all of our basements)—here’s our top picks. See if you spot any features you’d like to include in your own basement finish.

We’re drawn to this basement because it represents well-apportioned space. With only a little over 700 sq. ft. of finished space, we still managed to design living area which includes a bedroom, bathroom, rec room with wet bar, and a sauna. Additionally, all of the finishes, flooring, and fixtures are part of our base-bid inclusions; our clients got this beautiful basement without having to upgrade anything at the Design Center.

Most basements include the typical arrangement of rooms—bedroom, bathroom, and rec room—at the very least. The homeowners of the basement below decided to personalize the wet bar area by adding built-in bookshelves and creating a study area/game table. Drinks and snacks are always close at hand, and there’s room to spread out and work on a science project or jigsaw puzzle. Plenty of recessed can lighting floods the area with an abundance of light.

The basement bathroom below proves that interior basement rooms (ones without windows) don’t have to be dark. This bright and stylish bathroom features glossy white subway tile in the shower, which contrasts pleasingly with the oil-rubbed bronze shower door and vanity light. Navy blue cabinets add a pop of color, and we also like the conscious design choice of satin nickel plumbing fixtures and bath/cabinet hardware, proving that metal finishes do not have to match throughout.

Another great example of open, light, and bright—this beautiful family room welcomes all with soft leather couches and an assortment of textural throw pillows. The grid of pictures on one wall anchors the space with a monochromatic vibe. LVP flooring throughout the basement offers convenient care, but is softened here with a large area rug. Note again the abundance of recessed can lighting (easily dimmable), making this a space that looks nothing like the dingy basement it once was.

And—the MVP for Best Performance in Stained Wood goes to this basement! Starting with the graceful open handrail entrance into the room, you eye is drawn to the stained baseboard, door casings, and window trim, then upward to the beautiful wood-wrapped ceiling beams. Both the soft color of the walls and the light color of LVP flooring work well together to enhance the darker stained woodwork.

Who doesn’t dream of a dedicated hobby room? Our clients who finished the basement below opted to add a craft room with floor-to-ceiling built-ins with a connecting desk. Strategically-placed can lighting, as well as the large egress window, ensure that task lighting is sufficient. LVP flooring underfoot makes sweeping up pins and scraps a breeze.

Now that home-officing has become the norm, who wouldn’t want an office like this one? The walk-out basement offers full-light, above-ground windows with a view, and the addition of a closet makes the room count as a bedroom when it comes time to sell. With a bathroom just around the corner, this room also makes great guest quarters.

For those who do have the money and inclination to splurge, there are limitless ways to personalize your space. Here, the caged pendant light fixtures, basketweave tile splash, and upgraded cabinetry all work harmoniously to elevate this basement Jack-and-Jill bath in an understated and sophisticated way.

We love the elegant simplicity of the wet bar in this walk-out basement. Placing it in a recessed part of the wall keeps traffic flow open, and the bar itself feels airy and spacious with its open shelving and under-cabinet lighting. Monochromatic counter-to-ceiling splash tile adds textures and interest. The darker counter top provides a striking foil to the surrounding lighter tones.
