When you have the luxury of starting with 1,785 unfinished square feet and garden-level windows, chances are favorable you’ll end up with a big and bright finished space. The owners of this basement availed the opportunity by working with us to design a plan that makes the most of their basement’s best features.

Dividing common and private areas with a wall at the staircase not only clearly defines the living area, but also provides a sound barrier for the bedrooms on the other side of the wall. A spacious seating and TV area—adjacent to a large wet bar with additional seating—contributes to a welcoming vibe.

Sixteen recessed can lights (on different circuits) illuminate the space without creating glaring light, adding to the cheerful daylight coming through the garden-level windows. Soft white paint on walls and ceiling throughout further reflect the light.

The luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring installed at the wet bar area stands up to inevitable spills and scuffs while maintaining its wood-like appearance. Entertaining is a breeze with a built-in dishwasher, a microwave tucked under the counter, and room for a free-standing refrigerator (not yet installed). And speaking of luxury, note the doorway that leads to 200 sq. ft. of unfinished storage!

To add a stylish pop of color, our clients chose Tharp’s Hale Navy for both wet bar and bathroom cabinetry. The richly painted hue helps to anchor the space while adding personality and interest.

Bright white quartz counter tops keep the deep navy cabinets from overwhelming the space.

Two large bedrooms on the other side of the staircase—each with a spacious walk-in closet—are separated by a full bath. A hallway entrance to the bathroom offers convenient access for guests.

Glossy white subway tile brightens the bathroom (the only room without windows). The darker grout used in tile installation provides a pleasing contrast, as does the wide band of white liner tile.
